Abstract

Background: A new reading lamp was designed with eye care technique of dynamic simulated sunlight, and the subjective feeling of the lamp was going to evaluated. Methods: Dynamic simulated sunlight was designed with 108 independent point-source of light and made into reading lamp(lamp A). Two common lamps were selected as control(lamp B and C). Subjects read for 5 min under each lamp randomly with 1-2 min dark adaption at intervals. At last, they would fill the questionnaire of subjective feeling with parameters of clarity, comfort , glare and favour rate of lamps. Results:There were 178 subjects completing the tests, aged from 10 to 69 years old, with 83 males(47%). In overall samples, the favour rates of lamp A, B and C were 52%, 37% and 11%, respectively. Favour rate of lamp A was significantly higher than lamp B and C (chi-square test, pAB<0.01,pAC  <0.01). After divided into teenager group(aged 10~20 ), young adult group (aged 21~40)and the elderly group(aged >40), favour rates of lamp A were significantly higher than lamp B and C in young adult group(54%,39%,6%,pAB<0.05,pAC  <0.05) and in the elderly group (61%,31%,8%,pAB<0.05,pAC  <0.05), excluding the teenager group (41%,39%,20%,pAB>0.05,pAC<0.05).

Conclusions: The favour rates of lamp A were higher than lamp B and C in young adult group, the elderly group and the all subjects except teenager group, which suggested that the dynamic simulated sunlight was safe and generally more comfortable.
